Sgt. Edward Keady, 19-year Veteran of BCPD, Dies

(1-20-99) -- A funeral Mass was said at St. Joseph's Church in Needham on Jan. 19 for Boston College Police Sgt. Edward M. Keady, a 19-year veteran of the campus police force who died Jan. 15 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston after a brief illness. He was 47.

Colleagues recalled Keady as a hard-working police officer with a ready smile, an avid Boston College hockey fan who served as the point man for campus police coverage of BC football games.

"He always had a way to make you laugh if you were having a blue day," said BC Police Lt. Margaret Connolly, who worked the overnight shift with Keady when both were in their early years on the BC force.

Boston College Police Chief Robert Morse described Keady as "the type of guy who would do anything you asked him to do -- and do it 100 percent.

"He loved being a police officer," said Morse. "He loved being a Boston College police officer."

Morse estimated at least 50 uniformed officers from 10 towns and colleges attended the funeral Mass on Tuesday.

A life-long resident of Needham, Keady served two years on the Needham police force before joining the Boston College Police Department in 1980.

He was a graduate of Needham High School and of Northeastern University.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; two sisters, Maureen Harris of Abington and Sheila Butaro of Reading; one niece and two nephews.

Burial was in Needham Cemetery.
