In Memory

Marty Shea

Martin Leo Shea Jr. of Bluffton S.C. passed away on March 23, 2022, due to complications from a bone marrow transplant. He was born in Needham, Ma. on August 15, 1952, and was the beloved son of Josephine Nizarri and Martin Shea Sr.  He is survived by his wife Patsy Murphy, daughters Candace Trundley, Leah Nee and Brenda Shea and son Derek Murphy.  He is also beloved and missed by his grandchildren Madison Trundley, Lyndsey Trundley, Grace Trundley, Marcus Murphy, Cole Nee, Cade Nee, Dylan Nee, and Cecilia Shea.

Marty was a devoted husband and father.  He adored his children and grandchildren and took great pride in their accomplishments.  He liked to teach and encouraged them in any task they endeavored to do whether it be sports or academics.

Marty graduated from Needham High School where he was active in sports. He was a member of the Needham High state hockey championship team and also the state championship team for baseball. He developed an interest in golf at an early age and became an excellent golfer. During his lifetime, he had nine 'holes in one' to his credit.  He thrived on competition and loved the game.

He retired to South Carolina after working as an Account Executive for AT&T for twenty-seven years.  He liked to keep busy and would do house repair, painting, and odd jobs in the community.  He had many friends and would gladly help anyone in need.  He was well-loved and respected by his friends and neighbors.

Per Marty's request, there are no services planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Obituary from Sauls Funeral Home.  Thanks to Paul Cunningham and Patsy Murphy.

Marty was a character in the best sense of the word.  We played dozens of card games in junior high and high school which he made fun with his many spoken "Martyisms".  To this day with a hand of cards I still remember all the quips he used to entertain us when he drew his hand, looked it over and played it out.  Marty was sneaky persuasive.  He could sell snow to the Eskimos just as easy as he could talk a dog off a meat wagon.  A unique personality and a better athlete then he got credit for.

Marty was a hustler, in a positive sense.  Always lookng for the angle, in cards games, on the golf course, street hockey or whatever game we were playing.  And as Bob recalls, there was always the quips & wink/smile to accompany Marty's hustle.  Wonderful memories of a true character!

I like how Bob and Artie charcterized Marty.  He was always Smoothie Shea.  I remember our hockey days of course, but in the 80's I was living in Hyde Park and Marty invited me over to his house in West Roxbury to pitch me on joining Amway.  He said, Barbara Walters is even selling Amway.  Well, I declinded to join the multi level marketing concept of Amway.

I did have a nice long conversation with Marty in August of 2020 after he wished me a Happy Birthday on the NHS website.  We covered a lot of ground about what we had been up to since high school.

Marty loved playing golf and his frequent golf partner was Billy Driscoll, who graduated a year after us.  They belonged to Norfolk Country Club in Dedham.  I had a friend who also belonged there and he knew Marty.  He said Marty would always try to help you out with your golf game when playing with him.

As they say in Boston Marty was a Wicked Pissah!

Requiescat in Pace Marty!

Great times playing hockey and joking on the school bus to away games, he was an incredible athlete. Great sense of humor.
